Devo confessare che ho acquistato questo libro in inglese nella versione Kindle soprattutto per fare un po' di esercizio con la lingua.
I thriller mi piacciono molto come genere e così il gioco era fatto.
In pratica fino al 75% il libro è stato noioso e si è trascinato lentamente. Successivamente ha iniziato a prendermi di più. Ma solamente alla fine è successo qualcosa di avvincente.
Il personaggio principale dell'investigatrice è a mio avviso poco credibile. Tanto ribelle alle regole e troppo inopportuna. Più di una volta riesce ad avere il cellulare completamente scarico a farsi sopraffare dallo stesso personaggio senza poter chiedere aiuto. Non insegnano agli investigatori, che usano il telefono per lavoro, a portarsi un power bank in tasca e qualche tecnica di autodifesa?

Forse ho finalmente capito che i gialli non fanno per me. Ma questa ė veramente solo letteratura di consumo, low (very) brow, confezionata nella neppur celata speranza, forse ormai vana, causa inflazione, di vederla trasformare in una sceneggiatura da film. Per fortuna ho avuto l’idea di leggere il libro elettronico in inglese, cosa che, trattandosi di scrittura attuale, mi ha fatto incontrare un congruo numero di frasi idiomatiche e termini gergali, suppongo appartenenti alla lingua albionica corrente. Ma anche per questo aspetto il costrutto è poco: passano cone acqua che scorre e non lasciano che una labile traccia nelle mie senili meningi. La trama “gialla” sfida senza pudore le più assurde inverosimiglianze. Lo scavo (detto per dire) psicologico dei personaggi ė all’insegna dei più triti luoghi comuni, con sovrabbondante condimento di politically correct. Consigliasi non perdere tempo e guardare piuttosto un vecchio, buon film di Hitchcock, per dedicare il tempo a leggere qualcosa di serio. Magari, se si vuol proprio restare al poliziesco, un Simenon, per dire.

Scritto bene, un po' lento inizialmente, recupera nel finale. Il tempismo di alcuni eventi è poco realistico, altrimenti avrei dato una stella in più.

Questo libro non decolla mai.
Parte con la classica scena di un certo genere di crime thriller narrata dal punto di vista della vittima, scena che sappiamo già come andrà a finire. La protagonista, Erika Foster, è una detective di origini slovacche, come l'autore, che è considerata molto brava nel suo lavoro, ma da poco ha perso il marito durante un'azione di polizia. Viene richiamata al lavoro per dirigere l'investigazione di questo caso per via della sua bravura, ma viene continuamente ostacolata dal proprio capo, che pare volere tutto tranne risolverlo (almeno fosse stato così... e invece si comporta semplicemente in maniera insensata). Erika, rientrando nel classico cliché di poliziotta rude e impulsiva a tutti i costi (caratteristiche che automaticamente renderebbero chiunque inadatto ad avere un ruolo di comando in polizia), disubbidisce al proprio capo, diventa aggressiva, si comporta un po' da matta e finisce anche per metterlo in imbarazzo, poiché sembra non avere altra ragione di vita se non risolvere il caso.
Onestamente ho trovato il comportamento di tutti i personaggi spesso artificioso, sopra le righe o poco logico.
Possibile che una bravissima detective che si ritrova un biglietto dell'assassino in tasca non si preoccupi di trovare delle cose fuori posto nel proprio appartamento? Astutissima, direi. Altro che Sherlock Holmes!
Il romanzo di tanto in tanto si allontana dalla protagonista, mostrando scene da punti di vista poco rilevanti. La stessa scena del climax non è dal punto di vista della Foster, che tra l'altro non aveva assolutamente capito chi fosse l'assassino finché non se l'era ritrovato di fronte a minacciarla.
Insomma, a parte una minima curiosità di capire l'identità dell'assassino, il romanzo non è riuscito a coinvolgermi.
L'edizione (ho letto quella originale in inglese), poi, lascia a desiderare, tra refusi involontariamente comici (il dessert diventa un deserto!), altri incomprensibili (lo stesso nome a distanza di poche parole scritto in due modi diversi), fastidiose ripetizioni e persino errori di formattazione.
Mi ha dato l'impressione del primo tentativo di scrivere un thriller, ispirato magari dal cinema, più che una storia immaginata e strutturata per la parola scritta. Probabilmente lo stile dell'autore sarà migliorato nei libri successivi della serie, ma credo proprio che non lo scoprirò mai.

1st book read by this author & can't make mind up about the leading lady. Found her methods disturbing at times & the story smacked, on more than one occasion , of a series by another author about a leading lady with dubious detective skills who also dices with death. I haven't bought the following up novel yet & price will determine whether I do not. There's so many more books out there I want to read first.

I read this book, and I did get to the end of it though it was touch and go as to whether I would or not. The problem for me, though I enjoyed some aspects of the book, were manyfold. I couldn't accept that Erika would have been immediately assigned to lead the investigation on her first day back at work, and her first day in a new city, after the history of why she had not been at work. In fact I didn't really accept that she could so easily have been transferred from Manchester to London, as if they were part of the same police force. Then England and Wales Police Force is non-existent, as is the rank of Detective(assigned to Moss and Peterson). There were a lot of such errors in the book which was rather irritating.

Among other things that irked are:
that the lead character is always referred to by her forename whereas all the others are only referred to by their surnames,
that the author falls into the, seemingly obligatory these days, trap of having another detective of equal rank who is incompetent and hates her, who takes over and refuses to follow the clues,insisting on the guilt of one individual to the exclusion of other possibilities,
that the bitten hand is never treated and just disappears from the storyline
that the Chief Superindent and the AC were caricatures, operating only to make things more difficult for Erika,
it was deemed necessary to make the 'detectives' Moss and Peterson come from minority groups - nothing wrong with that of course, but these days it seems to be de-rigueur and begins to smack of let's pander to political correctness...
lack of knowledge of police procedures is evident throughout,

There are many other examples, but I cannot say that I didn't enjoy the main body of the story, it was an interesting idea but the flaws in authorship almost ruined it. It could have been told without the need for the lead character to have been so damaged, and without the antagonistic DCI Sparks. Whatever has happened to decent police procedurals. These days it seems necessary for everybody of equal or greater rank to the lead character to be useless and thwarting every move that character makes, which the author might do well to realise can often deter readers from considering future books in the same series.

I read this book as an interlude in my reading of the Rebus series by Ian Rankin. I will quickly return to that series as it is Ian Rankin is a master of his genre.

The Girl in the Ice....Not a bad read, reasonably fast paced with yet another detective series featuring a strong, but damaged female lead (Lucy Black, Kim Stone) However, a Peter James novel it is not. Whilst PJ spends a lot of time to research police procedures to ensure accuracy & credibility, it is obvious the same amount of dedication is not shown with this author.
We are told that an iPhone will continue to transmit it's location for five days after the battery is exhausted!. No it won't - because the battery is exhausted!
The location of said phone was also in a location very unlikely to be able to receive or transmit to the local cellular tower. We are then told that the police have downloaded all of the data from the iPhone! Erm...no you can't. not even Apple can. Schoolboy errors removing credibility from the yarn.
Next we have police radios that 'hiss'. Maybe in the 70s, Met Police radios are all encrypted digital Tetra. Ever heard 'hiss' on a Dab radio? We are also led to believe that a met police radio will be working deep into Norfolk. You guessed it - no they don't (ok technically NSY can patch any area together but they would not for this storyline)
The word I hate the most was to spring up in this book. 'Hunch' Often used in mediocre American tv cop shows as a lazy way to move the plot forward without having to think. The word 'hunch' was similarly used in this book.
Ok, the next bit will give a bit of detail of the plot, so skip if you wish...
How did they know where to send the helicopter? Ok ANPR will help, but it located the target vehicle without difficulty and did not even seem to look, it just appeared above them. also the police helicopter (India 99) is not a taxi service for police, it would not have picked up members of the investigation team on route and they certainly would not be 'spotting' from the helicopter. There are on-board specially trained personnel for this task.
If you can overlook the above, the story is ok, moves along fairly well and is not to taxing. The ending does seem a little rushed and could have been expanded to give better closure to the story. As far as who-dun-it's go, it will keep you guessing right to the end.

I will give the second book a read, but will immediately tear it up should I find the word 'hunch' appear in the text....
