Given that book's success, it's no surprise that Nina Olsson is back with another volume of recipes. This book is more focussed on foods for festivities. The theme of the book is the idea that dinner parties and get-togethers are more informal now than in the past, and the recipes are designed to be straight-forward with lots of dishes that can be prepared well in advance.
The recipes are divided thematically - midsummer, midwinter, hearty meals, al fresco. There is a small section on more formal dinner party ideas, plus a small section on deserts, but the main thrust of the book is hearty, healthy veggie fare. Not surprisingly, given that Nina Olsson is an art director, the book is presented impeccably, with beautiful photographs of food. The plates and bowls of food look stunning and - importantly - don't look too difficult to replicate. Highlights for me are a salad with watermelon and candy-striped beetroot served with a miso and caper sauce: the finished dish is incredible and completely unlike anything I could have created myself. Occasionally ingredients can be a little hard to source, as with the candy-striped beetroot, but nothing is proscriptive, substitutions are welcomed! I also loved the recipe for the Japanese pancake okonomiyaki, which is extraordinarily simple and tasty. Instructions are uniformly clear and fuss-free, perfect for the beginner as well!
This is a colourful, fun book which makes the preparation and enjoyment of plant-based food simple and enjoyable. As a gift for a vegetarian or non-vegetarian alike this would be excellent.
