Let me preface my review by saying that I've never been fat, so I'm a person who is putting nutrition and health in front of an ideal body.
Dr. Shanahan contradicts a lot of what she has said in her past books in this current book. I appreciate her current research in the Ketogenic diet and found it interesting that this was her way of "resetting" metabolism, but this does not seem to be in check with her past values. I understand furthering education, but she is plain contradictory. I feel Deep Nutrition was (in her words) "not anti-carb, but pro-healthy carbohydrate portioning." I've read her books and I've read them well. The Fatburn Fix seems to just be pretty anti-carb until you read her recipes, which again contradict Deep Nutrition. Fruit sugars: "sugar is sugar" and fruit is a source of sugar with not much other nutrition...so why recommend it if she originally did not? Would at least appreciate any new research that may state that the fiber in fruit is helping for digesting those sugars, and feeding good gut bacteria (as David Kessler will tell you).
Hunger. She doesn't not explain it well. Going from helpful advice that hunger signals should not reflect hypoglycemic symptoms (very good), to a proper diet should not make you feel hungry (....what) to toward the end of the book where she mentions being hungry again. WHAT? I understand not being excessively or constantly hungry but she doesn't mention that. Well, if I'm not hungry Dr. Cate Shanahan then why would I ever eat? For nutrition? Well, what about when she writes that hunger signals can come from habit of eating? I understand when she says that hunger should be a quest for nutrition, but she contradicts what hunger means throughout the book. I am not going to eat if I'm not hungry. That creates poor habits.
Recommending sugarless gum, Citrucel and Metamucil. And she recommends the sugar free versions of those which if you read the ingredients contain aspartame. And this is a recommendation coming from a doctor. This is not the type of information people seeking health advice needs. Recommend psyllium husk instead maybe?
From the FAQ section of the book: "Exercise does help your health dramatically. But it’s not an answer to weight control for most people who need to lose weight." ...what? Why not Dr. Shanahan? Please explain. And please recommend physical activity to your readers in the next book.
Intermittent Fasting. We know this works for some people. I am not one of them and that's ok, so I didn't take that advice too seriously since it doesn't much apply to me. But aside from IF when she just flatout recommends skipping a meal once in awhile seemingly just because? I'm not ok with that. Poor advice from a doctor. That enables bad behavior from people with disordered eating, who may be reading this book looking for actual nutrition advice to maybe help poor eating. I am by no means attempting to body shame but, Dr Shanahan seems to use the same photos on her books and website, obviously when she was younger looking. A recent interview with her discussing this very book, she seems weak and frail. I do not feel comfortable taking nutrition advice from someone who recommends skipping meals and also seems to be in subpar health. No offense intended, just something that spoke to me.
This book made me question the nutrition I thought I knew from Dr. Shanahan. I am going to disregard this book in it's entirety. I wish I could return it. I would never recommend unless you enjoy disordered eating and contradictory advice. If this works for you I am happy; take control of your health! But I reccommend looking into other nutritionist's advice. I give the book two stars because it does have some decent advice, but generally I feel the thoughts were scattered and incomplete. Almost like this was an attempt to bank on current food trends. My heart is honestly a little broken. I took her previous books to heart (and changed my life let me tell you!) but this is not a book for anyone. Please read Food Rules or Deep Nutrition instead, or Fast Carbs, Slow Carbs by David Kessler for nutrition. If you have a history of disordered eating, food addictions, or anything of the like please consider in Intuitive Eating by Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole. Please responsibly take control of your health, educate yourself and others and do not listen to fad diets.
Dr Shanahan is anti-fruit, and gives mixed messages about the importance of calories. Then her recipes use fruit including dried fruit. I found her position on fruit to lack nuance. Given that fruit provides fibre, I don’t see how it can be compared to candy. I have lost body fat while consuming fruit, and many others have done the same. Calories in, calories out applies. Fibre helps, and fruit contains fibre.
I did find the information about carbs and fats to be fairly persuasive. Dr Shanahan mentions a study where mice, fed corn oil; developed insulin resistance while the olive oil group did not. She says all the usual things about unstable vegetable oils, processed foods and simple carbs to be aging. I’m on board with that and as I don’t find those foods to be filling, I can see how they would promote fat gain. The satiety index of foods does vary, but no food is inherently evil. Also, what about those who train hard?
Overall I don’t like this book, as it was a time-inefficient way to get the author’s contradictory message. You would be better off strength-training, monitoring your food intake and body composition; and eating a mainly whole foods diet. This book overcomplicates things. Finally, I agree that this author only posts glossy pics of herself from many moons ago. There are no magic foods and any differences that avoiding ‘evil foods’ (vegetable oils and sugars) makes is fairly minor. If that weren’t true, the author would put current pics of herself in the cover sleeve.
