"'When you're torn between two choices', Kate's tennis coach once said to her, 'don't ever try to do something in the middle of both of them. Commit to one of them.' But I didn't do that. I could have ignored it or I could have confronted him, instead I met myself in the middle. I'd stay and get him alone, and then mention it and hope he told me. And then I'd decide what next after that."

Rachel and Jack are a new couple, together less than a year, and Rachel is pregnant. Blissfully in love but struggling after the death of her mother and breakup from previous boyfriend she thinks cheated on her, Rachel reads a mysterious email of Jack's and suspects he is hiding something from her. She decides to do some digging and uncovers evidence of his deception, that he is hiding his past from her. However Rachel also has her own secret, something from her past that she struggles to confront and that Jack knows nothing about. Will they be honest with one another and how will it affect their future together as new parents?

Set in both Newcastle (where Rachel is from) and Oban (where Jack is from) this slow-burning, psychological thriller is claustrophobic, bringing in primarily the two main characters and their family and friends, including Rachel's sister Kate. The narrative jumps back and to between present day and when events happened, to provide context. It explores decisions Rachel and Jack made and more importantly how they are dealing with the aftermath and the shadow it cast over their lives. The revelations are shocking and sad, dealing with life and death moral issues, and the novel considers how lives go on after such tragedy.
