New Term

Un grido squarciò il silenzio della notte. Era uno strillo acuto e spaventato, che terrorizzò i ragazzi.
«Svelta! Dev'essere Anne!» disse Julian, e lui e George si misero a correre più veloci che potevano.
Lei, però, era placidamente addormentata nel suo letto.
«Che strano» disse Julian, ancora scosso. «Allora chi ha gridato?» «Era un urlo da brividi, Julian. Non mi piace. Qualcuno era terrorizzato. Ma chi può essere?»
Prima che Julian finisse di parlare, la luce nella caverna si spense! Poi una voce risuonò nel buio.
«Non muovetevi! Fate un solo movimento e sparo.» George sussultò. Cosa stava succedendo?
Trattenne Timmy per il collare, per paura che si lanciasse contro l'uomo e che quello gli sparasse.
Poi la voce parlò di nuovo.
«Allora, adesso ci riveli il tuo segreto?»
Sono iniziate le vacanze di Pasqua e Julian, Dick, Anne e la cugina Georgina, che si fa chiamare George, tornano a Kirrin Cottage insieme al cane Timmy. Quando una terribile tempesta si abbatte sulla casa rendendola inagibile, i ragazzi sono costretti a trasferirsi dall'amico Pierre, nella sinistra località di Castaway Hill. Qui, però, succedono cose strane: nelle notti di luna piena qualcuno lancia dei misteriosi segnali luminosi dalla torre della casa, e nella rete di cunicoli segreti che si dipanano sotto la collina si aggirano personaggi inquietanti. Quando Timmy rimane intrappolato in uno dei cunicoli e Pierre e il padre di George scompaiono dalle loro stanze, i ragazzi capiscono che hanno a che fare con un mistero molto più pericoloso di quanto sospettassero. Riuscirà la banda dei cinque a ritrovare gli scomparsi e a svelare i temibili segreti di Castaway Hill?
Senza fare rumore, la grossa pietra al centro scivolò prima in avanti e poi di lato, rivelando un'apertura. Julian lasciò andare la maniglia e illuminò il buco con la torcia. Non c'era altro che buio, là dietro!
C'era qualcosa in mare, vicino agli scogli fra le onde, qualcosa di scuro, grosso, che sembrava emergere dall'acqua per poi tuffarsi di nuovo. Cosa poteva essere?
«Caspita!» gridò George. «È una barca! Sta naufragando?» Mentre lo diceva, si udì un fragore tremendo di legno spezzato e la sagoma scura si incagliò sulla dentatura aguzza della scogliera.
