A gripping psychological thriller from the bestselling author of Follow You Home and The Magpies.
It was the job she had dreamed of since childhood. But on her very first day, when an unnerving encounter drags up memories Sophie Greenwood would rather forget, she wonders if she has made a mistake. A fatal mistake.
What is her ambitious young assistant really up to? And what exactly happened to Sophie’s predecessor? When her husband and daughter are pulled into the nightmare, Sophie is forced to confront the darkest secrets she has carried for years.
As her life begins to fall apart at work and at home, Sophie must race to uncover the truth about her new job…before it kills her.

After landing her dream job in publishing, Sophie Greenwood finds her past coming back to haunt her. Someone is taunting her. Someone who knows her history. At first it’s just unsettling, but when her husband and little girl get dragged in, Sophie becomes increasingly agitated and begins to fear for her life. Can she find out who’s tormenting her before it’s too late?
This is creeping suspense fiction at its best. Sinister, menacing and with a cracking, heart-stopping finale. Edwards does a great job of feeding Sophie’s neurosis and at the same time keeping several people in the frame for the baddie. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, wham! Off it goes in another direction. It really does keep you guessing until the very end.
So that’s all the good stuff.
As much as I liked Sophie as a character, however, Edwards does her credibility no favours early on. So, she’s a marketing manager working with young adult fiction but isn’t right up to date with social media? Really? I don’t think so. The Twitter thing turns out to play a key part in the plot, but ironically also punches a bit of a hole in its validity. I was enjoying the book and in a forgiving mood, so let it go, but it niggled at me all the way through. Costs you a star, Mark. Sorry.

Sophie Greenwood secured a job at a publishing company that she’s admired since a child.
On her first day she meets the big boss who asks if she has any secrets to divulge. There starts Sophie’s traumatic time at the company.
The novel is taken from her point of view in present day and also the days when she was at university and her friendship with Jasmine and Liam (Jasmine’s boyfriend).
What I didn’t get was the reference to books written by an author, which Sophie and her team were working on, it was, it seemed to me, to be novels by Mark himself and I just didn’t get what he was trying to do?
I thought it was very muddled and didn’t enjoy it, even though it was scary in places - Mark’s trademark story telling!
Sorry but this just didn’t do it for me.

The story is based on Sophie Greenwood, who gets to finally live out her dream and work for the publishing firm Jackdaw. But as soon as she enters this heavenly place.....steps straight into hell!
If your like me and have a short span of attention, then fear not. You'll be too engrossed in turning pages to think about loss of concentration.
The story will at times take you back and forth to Sophie's time at university and for good reason as it opens your mind to understand whats going on. You'll think....Oh I know who's behind this.....only to be thrown off course. The Devil's work is a roller coaster, ducking you one way, stearing you off in another. It will lift you up before throwing you straight down while at the same allowing your mind to imagine what true horrors await for our heroine!
If your a fan of Mark Edwards, you'll remember a charactor called Lucy Newton??? She's given brief mention of during one chapter which got me thinking.....wait.....has Mark got another upcoming story in the making! (yep she's been released) One that will return this angel of death to our kindles?? I hope so! The whole story is brought together brilliantly and for me.....this has to be the best read from him so far.
Will I read more from Mark Edwards. Yes!!!! Absolutely, most definitely!

I loved the background and the use of past and present. I got such a great feel for all the characters and I could relate them to people I know, there was nothing too far fetched.
A teenage love triangle gone wrong, a colourful friendship, and that one girl who you can't stand.
Moving on to a normal, imperfect but happy life where everyone is just looking for their own slice of the pie. A competitive work environment where things quickly seem to take an interesting turn.
Normally I am very good at figuring out 'who done it' but in this case it really could have been anyone and I wasn't sure until the end. There were many times that I thought Sophie could have some sort of a disorder herself.
I would recommend you read this if you enjoy a.good plot and alot of surprise.
