Randall Robinson's Defending The Spirit is a personal account of his rise from poverty in the segregated south to a position as one of the most distinguished and outspoken political activists of our time. In 1977, Robinson founded TransAfrica, the first organization to lobby for the interests of African and Caribbean peoples. TransAfrica was instrumental in the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in South Africa and the reinstatement of President Aristide in Haiti. Robinson's thoughtful and provocative memoir paints a vivid picture of racism in the hallowed halls of Harvard, where he went to law school, as well as the corridors of power in Washington, D.C. He also recounts in fascinating detail his trips to troubled African and Caribbean nations; more than anyone else, he has raised awareness of the problems in those countries. Defending The Spirit also gives a devastating commentary on America's foreign policy endeavors in African and Caribbean nations, and an impassioned call to African-Americans for new leadership and activism to fight racism all over the world.

Bitterly Sweet NostalgiaRecensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 23 aprile 2021
I have read several books written by Robinson. I concur the class structure, not Wilkerson's so-called "Caste" system has been challenged and compromised by many folks who suffer from not knowing a world without "Whiteness". I wish him well-being, which is more than I can say about those who perpetuate the systemic lust that permeates far too many who were originally raised to do/be/strive for better. Tick, tick, tick.

A Most Phenomenal BookRecensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 9 gennaio 2011
I'm on the cusp of my 62nd birthday. I've read countless books and this book, Defending the Spirit, will have a lasting impact on me for the rest of my life. No need for me to echo the praises already uttered I simply want to say thank you Randall Robinson for sharing intimate antidotes on your life, your family, and for your honest and frank discussion of race and power. "Power never losses it pauses".
Powerful!Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 25 aprile 2013
I fell in love with Randal Robinson after reading the first chapter. I love his analysis and poetic ability to tell a story. I was transported in time and appreciate his perserverance. He is my hero. I love how he was able to stand and defend a position when it was unpopular. I believe what I loved most was his courage during some very cold, lonely, & difficult times.
