An Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling series.
Kate Marshall’s investigation into a journalist’s disappearance sends her down an unexpectedly twisted path in a riveting thriller by the author of Shadow Sands.
Kate Marshall’s fledgling PI agency takes off when she and her partner, Tristan Harper, are hired for their first big case. It’s a cold one. Twelve years before, journalist Joanna Duncan disappeared after exposing a political scandal. Most people have moved on. Joanna’s mother refuses to let go.
When Kate and Tristan gain access to the original case files, they revisit the same suspects and follow the same leads—but not to the same dead ends. Among Joanna’s personal effects, Kate discovers the names of two young men who also vanished without a trace.
As she connects the last days of three missing persons, Kate realizes that Joanna may have been onto something far more sinister than anyone first believed: the identity of a serial killer hiding in plain sight. The closer Kate comes to finding him, the darker it’s going to get.

A cold case, a twisty and fast paced plot that kept me reading and turning pages.
Kate and Tristan are two fleshed out and interesting characters, I loved to read about them and their life.
The mystery is solid, full of twists and turns, and kept me guessing.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

What I love about Robert Bryndza's writing is his ability to create an overwhelming sense of mystery from the start, something he does spectacularly in this book. I could feel the tension build from the start, anticipated that something shocking and pivotal was about to happen, and then, when it did, I was completely invested in the story and even though I didn't know the characters involved at this stage, didn't know their history and wasn't necessarily engaged with them as people just yet, I was completely absorbed in the story. And this mystery continues throughout the book, several scenes written from the aggressors point of view, scenes which make it very clear what happened was not a one off event, that it was indicative of something far darker, far deeper than you may first imagine. Did I have an inkling part way through the book as to who the bad guy might be? Honestly ... yes, but that for me was half the fun, powering through to the end to see if I was right. It didn't impact on my enjoyment of the book in the slightest, it drew me in more.
Pace in the book is spot on, with the flow of the narrative ebbing and flowing much as the investigation does. There are times when you know something bad is about to happen, although you might not be fully prepared for what that is and there is a certain amount of misdirection involved that brought a smile to my face. But for all those scenes of high tension, there are moments of real emotion and reflection that give you time to pause and catch your breath. There are many scenes grounded in the hellish reality of everyday life too, just to remind us that kate is not some all singing all dancing, superstar Detective. Fancy trying to hire new toilet cleaners for a holiday park right at the start of holiday season anyone? And this brings us nicely to setting. The location of the stories are perfect, a blend of remote countryside, towns, cities and coastal retreats that allows for the killer to remain in plain sight whilst also the perfect cover and anonymity for them to execute their deeds and dispose of the evidence.
This was another top class, mystery laden read that had me powering through the pages. With brilliant characterisation, tension oozing from the pages and writing which really evokes emotion and the stark contrasts of the setting, it's definitely recommended. Fans of the series and of the author's writing will eat it up.

Twelve years earlier journalist Joanna Duncan left her office at the end of the working day, entered the multi storey car park and disappeared without trace. Now her mother, Bev and partner and local business man, Bill want to end their years of not knowing what happened and try and move on with their lives.
With access to the original case files, along with the names and addresses of the original suspects, including a local MP who lost his seat thanks to an expose of Joanna's, they begin their investigation which quickly becomes much more involved than they imagined. After a local man goes missing, who Kate and Tristan can link to their own investigation, things get very serious very quickly and it's obvious their cold case has suddenly become very current once again.
This is the third Kate Marshall mystery and an excellent read. The main protagonists have gelled, Kate and Tristan are a great team, and the storyline was compelling from the start. There are various points of view explored which gave an insight into why the perpetrator behaved the way they did but their identity was a complete surprise although in no way unrealistic. There were some unresolved personal issues which I look forward to following into the next in a series which, after a shaky start for me, has become a firm favourite.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent addition to a very good series.

I absolutely love Kate and Tristan. They make a great crime fighting duo. Both bring so much to these books and I am already desperate for the next book in the series. There is just something about this pairing that I find almost comforting. I think it’s like any favourite crime series, such as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, Poirot and Hastings. To have a successful series, you have to get the pairing just right and for me, Bryndza has created the perfect working partnership with Kate and Tristan.
I love watching cold case shows on the telly so when I read the book description for Darkness Falls with Kate and Tristan taking on a case of the disappearance of a journalist from 12 years before, I was desperate to read more. I have to say this was such a clever storyline and as they start to join the dots and zone in on getting closer to the truth, I seriously couldn’t turn the pages quick enough to find out just what had happened to Joanna all those years ago as well as the missing men.
Darkness Falls had me from the get go. It’s one of those books that once you start reading, you forget about everything else as you are so engrossed with the case and Kate and Tristan’s quest to discover the truth. One of the best storyline’s I have read in a crime thriller book in a while and I could feel the build up of excitement inside of me, the closer we get to that all important climax and boy what a climax! I had to pick my jaw back up from the floor. How it all comes together just showcases how brilliant this author’s writing is. An exciting and thrilling read that will leave you desperate for more!

Kate is a former Met police detective now running a private detective agency in Devon with her former teaching assistant, Tristan. Bryndza does provide background for new readers as well as details of changes that have occurred in the intervening period.
It is now 2015 and Kate and Tristan are hired by the distraught mother of Joanna Duncan, a young journalist who thirteen years ago had exposed a major political scandal. In the fallout Joanna disappeared without trace and has never been found.
The trail has long grown cold though as Kate and Tristan examine the case files, they discover the names of two young men who had also vanished at that time. It appears that Joanna may have come across the activities of a discreet serial killer. Where will the investigation lead? No further details to avoid spoilers.
The novel is structured in a way that aside from following the investigation there is the occasional chapter from the killer’s point of view. I felt that Robert Bryndza was very clever in dropping clues and the occasional red herring that kept me guessing up to the final reveal.
I so enjoy this kind of crime thriller and my appreciation of Kate Marshall and company has grown over the three books to date. Definitely a page-turner. Indeed I read it in a single sitting. Highly recommended.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Robert Bryndza’s books are always really gripping. The dialogue in Robert Bryndza’s writing is always engaging and it pulls you into the story. After the previous cases Kate has worked on have hit the headlines, she is contacted by a woman whose daughter, Joanna more than a decade ago. The case has never been solved and Joanna’s body has never been found. Kate and Tristan are determined to find out what happened to her daughter and bring closure to her family. But as they begin to investigate, the case becomes far more complex than they thought it would. And soon they begin to realise that Joanna’s disappearance might be connected to a series of other murders.
There is a lot of tension in this book which I loved and it’s what makes it an unputdownable read. This is the type of book that you can read in a couple of hours. The case begins to get even more intriguing and it felt as though Kate and Tristan were putting themselves very close to danger. The final revelations floored me as Robert Bryndza revealed the truth. I hadn’t been expecting that revelation at all.
I really like the friendship that Kate and Tristan have. It feels like there is more between them then just simply a business relationship, they feel like they both come from the same family, and this is what really makes them such engaging characters.
The Kate Marshall series is one of my favourites in the crime fiction genre. I can’t wait to see where Robert Bryndza takes this series next.
