The brand new up-all-night thriller from the Sunday Times bestselling author of Richard and Judy pick The Holiday, now a major NETFLIX Drama.
I should have known something was wrong. I should have sensed it. Felt it in the air, like the build-up of pressure before a thunderstorm, that heavy, loaded calm.
The curfew
Andy and Laura are good parents. They tell their son Connor that he can go out with friends to celebrate completing his exams, but he must be home by midnight.
The lie
When Connor misses his curfew, it sets off a series of events that will change the lives of five families forever.
The truth?
Because five teenagers went into the woods that night, but only four came out. And telling the truth might mean losing everything...

I have to confess that my previous experiences of reading books by Tim Logan have ended in varying degrees of disappointment. Either they have flattered to deceive, or else that have just not lived up to the amount of hype surrounding them. I can level no such criticism at his latest novel. "The Curfew" is far and away the best and most accomplished piece of work that I have read by this author.
I won't rehash the plot - the official synopsis contains all of the information you need to get started, without the risk of any annoying spoilers from me. However, I will happily say that this novel provides just about everything that a good thriller should - and it delivers it very well: The premise is enticing and the plot is credible. The characterisation is some of the best I have come across in a good while. Tim Logan has succeeded in creating a cast that genuinely feels real and relatable, backed up by dialogue that is natural and appropriate. I also thought the pace was excellent. Yes, there are times when events develop a little more slowly - but only when it is fitting for them to do so. At other times there is palpable sense of urgency, which is reflected in the writing style. The overall effect of these components coming together is a novel that not only grabs the attention, but keeps a firm hold of it and delivers ample amounts of drama, without ever overstepping the mark and becoming needlessly melodramatic.
I would be very surprised if the option to bring this to the screen isn't taken up - it simply screams that it is a mini-series just waiting to be made. In the meantime, if you are a fan of tense, atmospheric thrillers, or merely someone who appreciates well-written fiction of any genre, then this is one to add to your reading list.

Every parent must remember the trauma of waiting for your children to arrive home after a party or two. This story takes things to another level when the five young people who go into the woods fail to come out together, leaving one who doesn’t come out.
Laura and Andy are just like all other parents, willing to stick up for their child regardless of what actually happens. As all the parents are doing the same, how will the truth be found? We go on a journey with Andy as he tries to stick up for his son and support him through concerns about a missing girl.
Andy’s son Connor becomes the main subject of concern for police as the lies of his parents become obvious. What has Connor got to do with his friends disappearance? I loved the character of Connor’s sister, Harriet. She was fabulous throughout. The missing teen’s family are social media gold, and the book takes a trip into the dark secrets that people unwittingly share by their use of social media. Let that be a lesson for everyone.
I enjoyed the issues explored in the book, such as bullying and toxic friendships. I enjoyed the pace in the book, which rattled on and on, building nicely until the end. The atmosphere was excellent and you could feel the creepiness of the local woods after dark. I was kept guessing until the end and loved the twists and turns throughout the book. I look forward to reading more from Mr Logan in the future.

It did not disappoint. Logan is fantastic at cresting characters who are 3 dimensional and believable. He crafts a superb story with the perfect t balance of detail and allowing you to use your own imagination.
The story grips you and draws you in.
My favourite character was Harriet who is just brilliant.
I'm not going to re-write the blurb or summarise - I think you only need to know that it was fantastic.
I've literally devoured it in around 4 hours and the only disappointment is that I've finished and have to wait till 2023 for his next book! (Which is mentioned in the acknowledgements at the end - a carrot dangling tantalisingly that I know have to wait for !

I enjoyed the book, finding the central mystery intriguing. There are aspects that stretch the bounds of credibility but I was sufficiently caught up in the tale to ignore them. I found the ending somewhat disappointing though, as the bad guy's motivation was really quite ludicrous and things could have been sorted out in a far more constructive manner, without resorting to some pretty serious crimes. Despite my reservations I found it a fairly diverting read.
