L'autore

Robert Menasse was born in Vienna in 1954 and studied there before moving to Brazil, where he lived for six years as a professor of literature at the University of São Paulo. He is the author of several novels translated into English, including Wings of Stone and Reverse Thrust, and of a work of non-fiction, Enraged Citizens, European Peace and Democratic Deficits: Or Why the Democracy Given to Us Must Become One We Fight for (2016). It came well-reviewed. But I wonder how many people read it to the end. It's ambitious (a good thing) but it's also verging on the pretentious. It's not nearly as funny as it wants to be. There are many plot lines and they don't all fit together into a coherent narrative. so, in summary, not worth it.

For a hardback, the print size is ridiculously small.

Bought this to read at bedtime... it worked. Took me months to get through it. Dry humour...? More like freeze-dried. I felt sorry for the pig for being dragged into this eurocratic mire. Not all bad - it did remind me of several places I visited in Brussels...

OK, Brussels and the EU are a bore. So imagine my surprise to read a novel that uses these dull settings in a novel and engaging way. Enjoyable fiction for the politically aware mind.
