Helena Marchmont is a pseudonym of Olga Wojtas, who was born and brought up in Edinburgh. She was encouraged to write by an inspirational English teacher, Iona M. Cameron. Olga won a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award in 2015, has had more than 30 short stories published in magazines and anthologies and recently published her first mystery Miss Blaine's Prefect and the Golden Samovar.

Alfie McAlister arrives in Bunburry to take possession of his late aunt’s cottage and becomes interested by the recent, unexplained death of a member of the local drama group. Performing an annual production of The Mousetrap, the group are known collectively as the A.A. (Agatha’s Amateurs). Alfie, convinced that the death was indeed murder, and equally certain that a member of the A.A. is responsible, sets out to discover their identity.

Unsurprisingly, this book reads very much along the lines of an Agatha Christie murder mystery. Although set in more recent times, the author has crafted a story that has the feel of an earlier period. The descriptions of the village, with its waterside location and ramshackle pub add to the illusion of times gone by.

Alfie is assisted in his aims to reveal the murderer by his friend, Oscar, who has a flair for finding just the right quote from Oscar Wilde to set Alfie thinking along the right lines. As Alfie sorts out the ‘good guys’ from the bad, he also enlists the help of a couple of the villagers.

This may be a short book, but it’s a very engaging read. The only reason I gave it four stars and not five, is that I would have liked the motive for murder to of been a little more complex. Overall though, if you want something easy but entertaining to read, then this fits the bill nicely and I would certainly recommend it to any fan of cosy mysteries.

Selling at 99p this book is no bargain. Short to begin with, the book itself accounts for only around 80% of the whole and follows a well-trodden formula centred around an unrealistic Cotswold village. It is competently written which makes it more annoying that the writer doesn’t appear to feel it necessary to put more effort into it and left me with the impression that these could be churned out by the virtual shelfload.

Although a little short for a novel this was a good story. Refreshing characters and easy plot, interwoven cleverly with great descriptive narrative of Gussie's home, the woodlands, the pub et al. However I so dislike 11% of the book that I purchased being take up with trailers for subsequent books. A short precis of a couple of pages is more that enough! Will I buy more - the jury is currently our on hat one!

This novella surprised me - in a good way. It read as fascinating as an Agatha Christie meets Jeeves and was a delightful and intriguing page-turner. The characters were as colourful as they were suspicious! Red herrings abounded, as they should in all well-written mysteries. I understand the target market was primarily in Germany but this lightly black/grey comedy crime story would hold its own in Europe and across the pond in USA. Thoroughly recommend it and have pre-ordered the next in the series.

short, sweet, too many references to agatha christie, and to oscar wilde, but otherwise mildly entertaining...full of "characters", and with a promising sub plot, which does not get resolved in this text, thus encouraging further purchases in the series...reasonable price for the product...well written, well paced, fairly predictable, but nevertheless cute and charming...
