Mortuary technician Cassie Raven believes the dead can talk. We just need to listen . . .
Cassie Raven is used to people thinking her job is strange - why would anyone want to cut up dead bodies for a living? But they don't know what she knows: that the dead want to tell us what happened to them.
She's eviscerated thousands of bodies, but never someone she knew, someone who meant a lot to her - until now.
The pathologist says her death was an accident. Her body is telling Cassie differently.

What I discovered was a fabulous read, gripping storyline and great characters.
The main character Cassie works as a mortuary assistant and treats the dead bodies with the care and respect as if they were still alive.
When one of the bodies is someone close to Cassie she becomes convinced that this death is suspicious.
With a police investigation and the introduction of DS Flyte the story is full of twists and turns that have you gripped til the very last page.
I devoured this book and think there is so much mileage in the characters that I'm keeping everything crossed for a second book.
A. K Turner is definitely my favourite new author of 2020!

The book has 376 pages with 53 chapters which is a well used format for a crime novel, i.e. short chapters which help to build up the excitement.
Cassie enjoys her job and it good at it. She seems to have a spiritual connection with the people that she handles - it's a fleeting moment but usually plausible and makes her seem authentic in her actions (and hopefully will be used in future novels).
I like the idea of the technician doing the thinking and the pathologist taking the credit - this is an interesting premise reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes with Watson and Jeeves with Wooster.
Most of the narrative is focused on Cassie but there are a few chapters that shift to DS Flyte, showing her background and motivation. It is probably that the police characters will be allowed to develop as the series progresses.
There are a few plot strands which more or less link together, some are concluded satisfactorily and others less so but the book has a generally good ending.
This is certainly good enough for me to want to read more novels about Cassie Raven.

In the mortuary, technician Cassie Raven - she a former tearaway now in Goth mode complete with tattoos, face studs and the like. What makes her so interesting is the compassion for her charges. She speaks to them as though still alive, determined they receive the respect due. She also has an acute eye for detail: noticing on the dead (and the living) clues that reveal much.
From Winchester, straitlaced DS Phyllida Flyte likes not what she now sees. Recent events have soured her, aim now simply to get on with her job.
Two events will change everything for both. Devastatingly, a body just brought in is of the woman who transformed Cassie's life for the better. How came she to die? Cassie's suspicions are aroused. Then there is the overnight disappearance of a corpse from the mortuary. DS Flyte investigates, instantly convinced Cassie is not what she should be.
So, two formidable characters and much more besides. Prepare for convincing details of life (and death) in a mortuary. Camden itself is vividly portrayed (although perhaps not in a way to make one wish to live there). Of interest too is Cassie's empathy (writer's too?) with those who have fallen by the wayside.
Result? Much is on offer. Tensions in plenty as a murder mystery unfolds, surprises en route. Perhaps rather too much subplot towards the end? Main strength here is a relationship so unusual and promising, "Body Language" cannot be a one-off but surely the start of a series. Many may hope so.

The whiff of the supernatural contributed nothing, could have easily been omitted without spoiling the story. Similarly, the secondary story strand of body snatching was quite gripping before it fizzled out but then it was a filler.
The last few pages was a bit of a car crash. They seemed rushed and were purely there to try and partly justify Cassie Raven's character. To me it added nothing and if omitted would not have really changed the story.
The book cover also suggested something more gritty and gripping than the content. I believe there are more books to follow involving Cassie Raven. Don't think I will rush to buy, its a crowded market for these stories and I think there is better out there.
