Lois si conferma un'abile scrittrice. Come la maggior parte dei suoi racconti, questo libro si conferma impossibile da smettere, una volta iniziato. Sembra forse un po' lento all'inizio, ma quando comincia ad accelerare, non c'è più verso di fermarsi.

Yay a short novel about Pen and Des - what we've been waiting for

10 books into the series I final get what I've been wanting - a short novel (~250 "pages" on kindle) for Penric and Desdemona, which seems like the series longest by some margin.

Pen and Des manage to foil an assassination upon Pen's brother in law that precipitates them all into the political skullduggery of the Empire next door from which they fled several novella's ago. As well as the juicy political plotting this book has themes of crime and redemption which fit well with Bujold's classy multi-layered writing from this and other series.

I would have a minor grumble that maybe the back-and-forth between Pen and Des takes a little bit more of backseat in this adventure but they still remain one of the classic sparky partnerships in SFF.

Buy - if you like LMB and have read the Pen and Des series to date
Don't Buy - until you've sampled the earlier books (then buy)

Unlike some other reviewers I believe the kindle price (£4.50) at time of writing is very good value imo for a short novel of this length.

Another great book in the Penric and Desdemona series.

Penric's brother-in-law General Arisaydia, narrowly escapes being assassinated by a sorcerer.

As killing by a sorcerer results in the loss of the sorcerer's demon, Penric is doubly involved in trying to capture the assassin. There are theological implications as well as a desire to protect his family.

The story dives deeply into the murky waters of Cedonian politics, which allows us to re-meet Arisaydia's finacee, Lady Tanar and her confidante/bodyguard, the delightfully lethal Bosha.

My favourite new character is a saint of the Bastard, Iroki. I just love his experiences while fishing. He's a fundamentally laid-back (or lazy depending on your point of view) man who likes nothing more than to relax by the water, sometimes fishing, sometimes just pretending to. I can see why the Bastard likes him - many people ask gods for something. Very few invite them to chill out and relax...

Last time Penric went to Cedonia, he ended up in a bottle dungeon. However, an assassin is trying to kill his brother-in-law, so Pen, along with some old friends and some new allies, is back in one of his least favourite countries, and as usual encountering chaos along the way. Who is an assassin, and why? Who isn't an assassin? (this is Cedonia, after all). Will Cedonia ever get a ruler who didn't win by removing their predecessor? Enjoy the ride!

Penric's character is somewhat similar to Miles Vorkosigan, by the same author. Not very effective until they get annoyed. When Miles becomes Admiral Naismith. Penric becomes Desdemona. For the Barrayaran Empire substitute The Bastard. The details of technology as as far apart as they can get. Even in fiction. Somehow the author makes it all work :)

another installment in the saga... charming little cream puff...entirely predictable, comforting in its plot, tying up lose ends, re-instating discredited persons, and unveiling others, adding a bit more theology and manifestations to the codex...well paced, well plotted, well written, but rather expensive for such an uncomplicated text...
