The assassinated Shah Jahan lies entombed beside his beloved wife in the Taj Mahal, while their progeny drag the Mughal Empire into a three-sided struggle over the succession to the Peacock Throne.

The diplomatic and trade mission from the United States of Europe is openly siding with Princess Jahanara and her brother Dara Shikoh. The mission, made up largely of Americans transplanted in time by the Ring of Fire, is providing the siblings with technical assistance as they prepare to fight their rivals for the throne, Aurangzeb and Shah Shuja. Meanwhile, the Afghan adventurer Salim Gadh Yilmaz, confidant of two emperors—Shah Jahan and now his son Dara Shikoh—has been elevated to the position of general. He has great challenges to face, not the least of which is resisting the fierce and forbidden mutual attraction between himself and Princess Jahanara.

As the conflict deepens, the junior members of the mission are sent east to buy opium needed by the USE’s doctors. Their guide, merchant Jadu Das, has an agenda of his own, one entrusted to him by Jahanara: seek out her great uncle, Asaf Khan, and promise whatever is needed to bring his army over to Dara’s side.

The USE’s mission was sent to India in search of goods needed in Europe. But now they find that straightforward task has become enmeshed in a great civil war—for control of the Peacock Throne.

The problem with any second book in a series is matching any magic in the first one. Unfortunately this one runs runs to that sort of issue. It was not bad and is a good continuation of Mission to the Mughals. However, there is nothing particularly great in the story. Against that it is a lot better than some of the other recent Ring of Fire releases. Worth reading.

Ring of Fire adventure continue in 17th Century India as dynastic war erupts- the USE is backing one brother while the English and Portuguese support the other faction. Intregue and martial clashes. A good read.

Great depiction of Indian court politics and history generally. A little plodding at times but a nice 2 day diversion, will probably read the sequel when it comes out.

Mission to the Mughals was a great book. This one is an average one. Plenty of the characters are portrayed in ways that feel cliched and untrue to their previous deceptions, sometimes undoing interesting development. The royal who the main characters are attached to was fun to read in the last book but incredibly annoying in this one and focusing too much on controlling his sister's sex life. He was onion of my favorite characters in the previous book and now its like he's login down the same path as Wilhlem Wettin form the German plot line. The villain actually cam across as more likable even though there's still something very dangerous about him. Too much time was spent in that camp, even if there was a little good political maneuvering against his third brother. He also gets a notable religious debate with a Catholic priest that is fine but not worth the pages and pages of repitiie dribble with that same strawman character priest which could have and should have been skipped over. The climatic battle scene was one of Flint's better ones, and the aftermath is entertaining though. That being said, the first three quarters of the book had me tempted to return it for a refund before I got to the last part.
